Peggie Kellam Memorial Lecture
Thursday 6th November 2014
Programme
Peggie Kellam was a pioneer in the recognition and treatment of stress. She selflessly served the local community for over 30 years in a variety of roles.
Peggie was born in Northern Ireland and spent a long career in social work in the United Kingdom. Her early experience of more radical interventions working in a psychiatric military hospital in war time and later with MIND helped her to understand the effects of stress and trauma on personal and working lives of individuals. At that time the concept of stress was not widely appreciated even in the medical profession and little or not at all in business and industry. In 1975 she gathered a dynamic multi-disciplinary group of individuals together and the charity, counselling and support network ‘Stress at Work’ was formed. Her efforts became recognised nationally and led to the award of an MBE before she passed away.
Each year, the Institute of Health and Wellbeing hosts a lecture in her memory, exploring current issues related to stress in the work place.
This year, Professor David Hands will explore issues of stress, care and compassion in the workplace, particularly the NHS, informed by his extensive research and significant operational experience in health service policy and development.
This guest lecture is open to all staff and students, but will be of particular relevance to those working and studying in health and social care disciplines and organisational psychology/culture.
